The Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention (ISTEP) summit will take place from June 23 through 26 in four Iowa communities-Emmetsburg, Waverly, Fairfield and Harlan. Theme of the summit is ‘Tobacco Knock Out.’
Leaders of the American Legacy Foundation will speak at each summit location of the four communities.
National youth smoking rates has plunged to an historic low of 8 percent since the American Legacy Foundation’s ‘Truth’ campaign launched in 2000, the Iowa Department of Public Health said in a news release.
“This isn’t your typical youth conference,” IDPH ISTEP coordinator Robynn Duchow said.
“We emphasize youth leadership and peer-to-peer education. We do in a fun format, like an interactive game show to test tobacco knowledge,” IDPH ISTEP coordinator added.
The summit will show awareness activities where attendees can learn about tobacco prevention practically and from other high school leaders.
About 1600 youth in Iowa are involved in ISTEP.
