Progressive leaders and activists will gather for the 2015 “Progress Iowa Corn Feed” at the Simon Estes Amphitheater in Des Moines on August 30.
Progress Iowa’s Executive Director Matt Sinovic told Iowa Free Press that his organization wanted to host the event “so that Iowa progressives would have the chance to get together and talk about how we can move our country forward, hearing from local and national leaders.”
“We contacted Presidential campaigns and asked if they would like to attend, or send a speaker on their behalf,” Sinovic said.
Progress Iowa, a non-profit group founded in 2012, describes itself as, “a statewide organization powered by a community of more than 30,000 progressives, focused on research, education, and advocacy.”
According to a statement from Progress Iowa, the following individuals will appear and/or speak at the gathering on Sunday:
“Senator Tom Harkin (Ret.), Congressman Dave Loebsack, Governor Lincoln Chafee, Congressman Joaquin Castro…Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, Iowa Senate President Pam Jochum, Iowa House Minority Leader Mark Smith, and candidates for U.S. Congress and Senate; Jim Mowrer, Desmund Adams, Monica Vernon, Pat Murphy, Gary Kroeger, Kim Weaver, Rob Hogg, Bob Krause, and Tom Fiegen.”
World-famous ice cream entrepreneurs Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield will also be appearing at the Corn Feed, where Ben & Jerry ice cream will be served to those in attendance. They have publicly endorsed US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, their home state, for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.
“Ben & Jerry are speaking on behalf of Bernie Sanders, who they support,” Sinovic said.
Given the diverse political playing field within the Democratic Party, other speakers like Congressman Joaquin Castro of Texas will be endorsing Hillary Clinton for president. Other presidential hopefuls include Chafee, Jim Webb, Lloyd Kelso and Martin O’Malley.
There will be live music from local band Bluebird, Pace & Crow until the speaking portion of the program commences.
The Simon Estes Amphitheater is located at 75 E.Locust St. in downtown Des Moines. Regular tickets are priced at $30 and VIP Reception tickets are $150. The proceeds of which will go to Progress Iowa and their campaigns.
