The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is looking into the death of an inmate in the Iowa County Jail, officials said.

Ross Allan Emerson hanged himself in an apparent suicide in his cell at 4:54 pm on June 24. After performing CPR immediately, Emerson was sent to Marengo Memorial Hospital where he died.

DCI is investigating the death requested by Iowa County Sheriff Robert Rotter. An autopsy of the dead body will be conducted in Ankeny at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, a news release said.

Emerson was in the jail on an assault charge.
